Growing Old Gracefully

Growing up, I remember seeing lots of celebrities and actresses like Lauren Hutton and Diane Keaton talk about the makeup conglomerate that they represent and how if you use their makeup, you too could grow old gracefully. Lately, I've really realized how much of a fallacy growing old gracefully really is.

My grandparents are getting up there in age and starting to really show the signs of old age. My Grandmother can't use a walker because she is too weak and my Grandfather has Alzheimer's or Dementia or something of that nature. He's in the hospital for the next three days getting test after test to determine the state of health. It's actually all very sad.

My grandparents have always been in my life. They lived close by us growing up so we would go over to their little one bedroom apartment for holidays. Now, I live 600 miles away so I'm relying on my Dad to provide updates. He really does a good job at doing that but it's still really hard to hear how quickly things go downhill.

I just hope that people open their eyes, hearts and minds to the fact that just because they may be old, they are still people with feelings and fears. I hope the doctor's don't half-ass tests just to make a buck and they really drill down to the cause of what is causing my Grandfather to be so lost. I love my Grandparents so much and actually dread when my Dad's number shows up on my caller id for the fear that I've lost one of them.

The advice for the day is to hug those that you love and don't take them for granted.

Top Ten Fashion Picks for Spring

This is an excerpt taken from the Dressing Well newsletter that I recently received. If you don’t know about this site, you’ll definitely want to check it out. Mary Lou Andre is the Founder and President of dressingwell.com and her tips are normally right on the money.

Check out her Top 10 Spring picks:
Top Ten Fashion Picks: Spring 2011
#1 A Versatile Dress.
Choose a sleeveless style that can be paired with jackets, cardigan sweaters and a variety of shawls and wraps. While still a great choice, think beyond the LBD (a.k.a. the little black dress). White, red and coral offer a fresh twist on this perennial classic.
#2 A Leather Jacket.
Whether you are conservative or in need of connecting with your inner biker babe, there is a leather jacket for you this spring. Coordinated correctly, they work as well with jeans as they do with a wide-range of dresses, skirts and traditional pants.
#3 Pleated Trousers.
Lighter weight spring fabrics make this traditional pant more comfortable, soft and chic. Many have wide, flowing legs meant to skim the ground — others have a slimmer cut, landing at the ankle with a cuff.
#4 Shades of Yellow.
A pop of color lightens up black and white, navy, brown and gray for spring. Yellow is the perfect accent for all your base neutrals this season.
#5 A Printed Trench.
If you already have your bases covered with a black and/or beige trench coat, consider adding a printed trench for extra style. We are partial to animal prints and florals this season.
#6 Open-Toe Pumps and Flats.
Whether for work or play, an open-toe can help lighten your look without being too over-exposing. Part sandal (you can see some of your toe) and part traditional shoe (they have a full backing around the heel), they are being shown on every heel height from stilettos to kitten heels to wedges to booties.
#7 Ruffles.
Whether cascading down the center of a simple sheath dress or creating soft, feminine details on tees, jackets, blouses and skirts, ruffles add style and can also camouflage a variety of figure challenges when strategically worn on your body. Skinny belts can create just enough of a horizontal balance to a long row of vertically placed ruffles.
#8 Big, Bold Accessories.
Items such as over-sized cocktail rings; weighted cuffs; thick, woven belts; long, layered necklaces; and oversized sunglasses add an interesting contrast to spring’s lighter weight fabrics and can ground your look with serious style.
#9 Top Handle Bags.
Their signature “clutch” handle makes them more structured than last season’s hobo-inspired looks. Many also feature a longer strap so you can wear them messenger style across your body. Pick a hue you love and wear it with everything!
#10 The Jumpsuit.
Finally, our list would not be complete without mentioning this fresh trend. Many are sophisticated enough to go to formal events when you add the dressy extras!
Any Spring picks jump out at you? I sure can help with any bold accessories that you may need this season! Head over here to browse.

Using the Color Wheel in Fashion

Do you ever wonder how fashionistas combine colors  to create unique, colorful outfits?
The color wheel is an excellent wardrobe tool to accomplish your unique style. In fact, you can not only use this in fashion but also in decorating your home as well.  Here’s a quick breakdown of how colors can either compliment or highlight your wardrobe or home:
You can make the following combos using the color wheel as your guide:
1. Colors directly next to each other (i.e. yellow and yellow-orange; yellow and yellow-green; violet and blue-violet, etc.)
2. Colors that form right (90 degree) angles with each other (i.e. yellow and red-orange; blue and violet-red; green and orange, etc.)
3. Colors directly across from each other (i.e. yellow and violet; blue and orange; red and green, etc.)
4. Colors that form a T (i.e. blue, orange, and violet-red; yellow, violet, and red-orange; yellow, blue-green, and red-orange, etc.)
5. Colors that form an X (i.e. blue, orange, violet-red, and yellow, violet, blue-green, and red-orange, etc.)
Since brown is a neutral, it will go with virtually any color on the color wheel. How awesome is that?!?! I love to pair a chocolate-brown with cobalt blue or fuchsia or bright red to create a bold color combination. Of course white, black, gray and the hues of blue found in denim are also neutrals that go with just about anything. Don't forget your metallics too. They are neutrals and can be mixed and matched with your wardrobe accordingly.
Have fun with fashion and accessories. After all, that's what defines your personal style!

Something to Think About...

I saw this on Twitter the other day and loved it. I wanted to share...

"I cheated on my fears, broke up with my doubts, got engaged to my faith & soon I will be HAPPILY married to my dreams"

What dreams have you resolved to shoot for in this new year?
